Oct 30, 2026 - 🎮 Claude Code won't recreate existing video games anymore

Anthropic quietly added a new rule to Claude Code, and it's aimed straight at AI game clones.

The exact instruction now given to Claude:
"Do build original games, games in a genre, and games from the user's own designs and assets. Don't build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original."

This was spotted by @chasm on X and confirmed inside Claude Code v2.1.314 (released Oct 30) by XDA
Anthropic sends it from its servers, and there's no setting to turn it off from the users side.
It's not in Anthropic's public changelog

Anthropic's Addy Osmani confirmed it on X: "using Claude to infringe IP is against our usage policy." He says original and genre games should keep working, and asked people to send him cases where Claude turns down their own work.

Users can still use Claude to make
Original games, Genre games (a roguelike, a platformer, etc.)
Games built from your own designs and assets

Unfortunately XDA found it doesn't clearly ban porting or recompiling old games, but Claude may still refuse them.

A developer already filed a GitHub complaint after Claude refused to help build digital versions of board wargames their customers own.

This comes right after Valve said it won't ban AI games and indie devs reported getting "pay up or we clone you" emails.

This is all unfortunate for the game devs, AI clones are flooding stores and hurting real indie devs.
And Claude has put some steps to stop the cloning but "is this a copy or just inspired by it?" is a hard line for an AI to draw.
