GTA VI的发布如何正在改写游戏零售与营销的打法

How the release of GTA VI is rewriting the playbook for gaming retail and marketing

The upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be a stress test of who can best capture players’ money, time, and attention.

Game retailers anticipate the release of GTA VI — both on consoles on November 19 and on PCs in the future — will be a bonanza for stakeholders across the industry, and they are preparing accordingly. As one of the most highly-anticipated game releases ever, GTA VI threatens to accelerate ongoing industry trends, from the death of physical games media to the rise of out-of-home games marketing. GamesBeat spoke to representatives of leading game sellers and marketers to learn how Rockstar Game’s upcoming release might impact the retail side of the industry. Here are some of the key takeaways.

GTA VI could accelerate the shift from physical game sales to digital distribution

With Sony planning to permanently discontinue physical disc production for all new PlayStation releases in 2028, the writing is on the wall for the slow death of physical games media — but the release of GTA VI is poised to accelerate this shift.

“Rockstar isn’t necessarily the one closing the lid on the box, but they’re definitely the ones making sure you’ll never have to pick one up again,” said Cormac Moylan, the chief marketing officer of the digital game storefront Loaded, in an interview with GamesBeat.

Although many gamers profess a desire for physical games media, Moylan said that the reality is that the “vast majority of gamers” have already made the switch to primarily playing digitally for reasons of both price and convenience. He said the release of GTA VI — which will be sold in stores as a code-in-box digital download voucher rather than a disc — could encourage holdouts to make the jump to digital.

“I do think that GTA VI will be the ultimate exception for a lot of these physical diehards,” Moylan said. “The demand is going to be so extreme that they’re all going to sacrifice their physical preference to play Grand Theft Auto on release day.”

The rush for cheaper ways to access GTA VI is already underway

The base version of GTA VI will be sold at a price of $79.99, with a more luxe Ultimate Edition coming in at $99.99. At this relatively steep price point, many gamers will not initially be able to afford a copy of GTA VI — but with hype around the upcoming release reaching historic levels, price-conscious gamers are already on the lookout for cheaper ways to access the game.

When Rockstar Games opened pre-orders for GTA VI in June, the digital game marketplace G2A observed a surge in orders for PlayStation gift cards, which G2A chief executive officer Bartosz Skwarczek attributed to gamers gearing up to purchase GTA. Skwarczek cited a recent survey of G2A customers that found that over 50 percent of respondents were unable to pay the full price for GTA VI, and were willing to wait up to 4.9 months to purchase the game at a discount.

In July, G2A experienced a sixtyfold increase in page traffic when it opened pre-orders for GTA VI, with numbers remaining approximately 30 times above the storefront’s pre-May baseline for the next five days.

“When we look at the data, it seems very clear that it’s going to be a big release — probably the biggest this year,” Skwarczek said in an interview with GamesBeat.

Gamers who are planning to wait to purchase GTA VI at a discount will likely be waiting for a while — at least if they want to purchase the game through official marketplaces, per Moylan.

“I don’t think Rockstar are going to want to undermine a product they’ve invested so much time and effort in,” he said, “and I don’t think gamers are going to want to wait three, four, or five months to get a small discount on a game they’ve been waiting 10-plus years for. I can’t see this game being massively discounted come mid-2027.”

GTA will draw players from across the market, but sports games face the most direct competition

The release of GTA VI has plowed a path through the wider schedule of game releases in 2026, with many game makers avoiding dropping their big titles in the lead-up to or wake of Rockstar’s November 19 launch. New data from the industry consultancy Open World shows players across genres and platforms will be making the jump to GTA VI come November — but that sports games in particular appear to be the most exposed due to a high audience overlap with GTA.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Open World executive vice president of research and analytics Kerri Norton noted that sports game audiences appreciate the same type of high-intensity, quick gameplay as GTA players, but that sports gamers’ purchase habits are also well-attuned to major releases like GTA VI.

“You can think of sports audiences as people who show up for these big launches every single year. EA FC comes out every year; there’s excitement around it. NBA 2K launches a title every year — so they show up for these big cultural moments, and GTA VI is no different for them,” Norton said. “They’re used to paying that $70-ish every single year for the new title, so it’s very much in their behavior already.”

GTA’s Miami campaign is bringing new attention to the role of out-of-home marketing for games

Rockstar Games has already turned heads with its location-based marketing campaign in Miami, the inspiration for GTA’s Vice City, which has included sports arena takeovers, custom automobile activations, and rumors of creator-focused events and parties throughout the city during the GTA VI launch window. Although the out-of-home marketing opportunity around GTA VI is particularly strong due to the unprecedented amount of excitement and interest around the game, other games can still benefit from this type of ambitious integrated marketing, according to Adam Singer, the vice president of marketing at the out-of-home advertising company AdQuick.

“This is sort of a unicorn launch, but that’s not to say that any other gaming company couldn’t have an ambitious campaign offline and online to tease the game,” Singer said.
