PlayStudios closes Tetris Block Party after cutting 177 jobs and shuttering four studios
Las Vegas-based PlayStudios has closed Tetris Block Party shortly after it closed four studios and laid off 177 staff over the summer.
According to AppMagic estimates, Tetris Block Party earned an estimated $8.1m in IAP revenue from 5.6m downloads since launch in January 2025. Ad and webshop revenue is not included in those estimates.
The game’s closure follows on from a second major restructure at the slots game-maker, which was announced in March. PlayStudios said its first restructuring program, dubbed Reinvention, cut $29m in costs.
The second, dubbed Renewal, resulted in the closure of four of the company’s nine studios and the loss of 177 jobs, according to the company’s last financial report. The latest restructure aims to save the company an additional $39m in costs.
Tetris Block Party’s closure will also result in an impairment charge of up to $3.5m in its forthcoming Q3 financials, which will be announced on November 9.
PlayStudios recently announced a reverse stock split in order to retain its place on the Nasdaq. According to a recent SEC filing, PlayStudios was told by Nasdaq in November 2025 that it was at risk of being delisted, as its shares were trading under the minimum bid price requirement of $1. The firm regained compliance after the stock split.
Tetris Block Party is not the first Tetris game closure from PlayStudios. The Las Vegas-based company has also launched and killed Tetris Block Blast, Tetris World Tour and Tetris Story in recent years.
PlayStudios does, however, continue to run Tetris, which appears to be an ad-driven game – it has earned an estimated $2.8m in IAP earnings from 115m downloads since launch in 2020, according to AppMagic.
